CENTENARY AND PRICES
Melbourne's Centenary celebrations maybe good for trade, but not so good for those with nothing but their labour for sale. The Melbourne "Age" reports that the housewives of Melbourne and its suburbs are complaining that increased prices are being charged for foodstuffs of all kinds, without any justifiable reason being apparent or offered by tradesmen. It has been suggested that with the prospects of money circulating more freely during the period of the Centenary celebrations many shopkeepers and other traders are seizing the opportunity to secure a greater margill of profit. For some months past there has been an upward movement in house rents in all suburbs, and it is reported that many people have difficulty in seeming houses to rent at reasonable rentals, taking into account flic reductions which still apply to wages and salaries.
