AN IMPRESSIVE SERVICE

A fitting tribute to tiie -service and ] 'i.-icrilice of members of the Now Zea- : land Army Nursing Service'during the Croat War was paid in the form of a special service which was held on the steps of the National War Memorial, Buckle Street, at 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon, the memorial carillon participating most effectively. During the war over 500 New Zealand nurses served overseas, and of these fifteen gave their lives—five-as. the result of illness contracted during military service and ten in the sinking of the troopship Marquette, which was, torpedoed in tho Aegean Sea when conveying the No. 1 New Zealand. Stationary Hospital from Alexandria to Salonika on October ! 23, 1915. Yesterday was the 19th anniversary of the Marquette tragedy, and the service, which was held under the auspices of tho. Now Zealand Overseas Women Workers' Association, was attended by some 50 people, mostly nurses who had served overseas with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force and who wero wearing their medals. The service was conducted by the Rev. N. Robertshawe, and among those present Were' Lieut.Colonel A. Cowles .(chairman, of the War Memorial Carillon Society .anilpresident of the Wellington. Returned Soldiers' Association) nnd- Miss J. liicknell, A.R.R.C. (who was in charge of the nurses). The weather was beau-, tifully fino with just a faint southerly breeze blowing and the sun shining down warmly oat of a clear blue sky. SERVICE AND SACRIFICE.
