MR. COATES'S STATEMENT

COMMENT BY MR. MCARTHUR

. In a communication from Sydney to the Press Association Mr. J. W. S. McArthur draws attention to the replies given by Mr. Coates in the House of Representatives on October 9 when answering certain questions submitted by Mr. XV. J. Broadfoot, the member for Waitomo.

I In a cablegram to Mr. Coates Mr. McArthur said that Mr. Coates's statement that the Commissioner's remarks, recorded on September 20, related to reconstruction proposals, was entirely incorrect. The document referred toby tho Commissioner was old and unimportant, having no reference to the reorganisation proposals, which were not made uutil October 2, six days later. Thero was also an inference by Mr. Coates that criticism of the proposals by counsel acting for the Crown was on September 20, the date when the Commissioner's remarks wero made. Actually it was eight days later.
