FARMERS' OBJECTIONS

GOVERNMENT URGED TO DELAY LEGISLATION

(By Telegraph—Press Association.)

DUNEDIN, This Day.

At a meeting of the Otago Council of the Farmers' Union a resolution wag carried urgently requesting the Government to refrain from enacting legislation to give effect to the Dairy Commission's recommendations till thest have been considered by the industry.

Mr. W. Lee, the mover, said that the whole trend of the report betokened the building of a huge Government department to be foisted on and supported by the industry, tho reason given being that tho board had not the confidence of tho industry or the public because of dissensions. With intimate knowledge of the board's working, ho said, his statement was a libel on the board members. It was true that the board had not accomplished all it desired owing to lack of lcgislativo authority foi which it had applied time and again, but to hand the industry over to Government influence and make the board a political machine was unthinkable to dairymen who were endeavouring to pay their way. The report offered nothing but extra taxation and harassing restriction.
