CERCLE FRANCAIS
An enjoyable gramophone recital was aiven to members of the Cerclo Francais recently, when the programme was in the hands of Mr.- Burtcr. Miss Smythson was hostess for the evening. Miss Coralic Sniythson read introductory remarks to the records, giving a brief outline of the composers' works. Madame Maunder gave a highly entertaining speech on the life of Gounod, who at the ago of 21 gained Le Prix de Home and studied under the directorship of the famous Sugres. As a personal recollection .the speaker mentioned Gounod's resemblance to her own father. The records included numbers from the works of Ambroise Thomas, Liszt, Meyerbeer, Verdi, Mozart, and Bach. Later followed records of Sacha Guitny and Yvonne Frinteinpa. Supper and the singing of the "Marseillaise," accompanied by Madame Maunder, concluded an unusual and enjoyable even-
