MR. W. G. PEARCE
After a short illness, the death occurred at Colyton on Saturday of Mr. AValter Georgo Pearce, at the age of 77 years. Mr. Pearce had lived in the Colyton district for over fifty years.
Born at the Hutt, Mr. Pearco accompanied his parents when a child on the long and historic trek to tho Sandon Smull Farm Settlement, the Pearce family being one of the original group to settle in that district. Tho journey by dray up tho coast to their new home over, Mr. Pearce remained at home till ho grew to a bo a young man, when he joined in the move to the Colyton district, taking up land and residing there evor since.
Mr. Pearce took o leading part in local body affairs and for many years represented tho riding in which he lived on the Oroua County Council. He held the offieo of treasurer to the county and eventually succeeded the late Mr. G. C. Wheeler as chairman of the county. Among his chief public interests was that of tho promoting of hydro-electric powor schemes, and for many years he was an active member of the Mangahao H^dro-Eleetric League.
