OVERLOADED COURTS

REORGANISATION IN FRANCE

An important step in gotting France's cluttered Law Courts back into working order has been taken by the Council of Ministers.

At present, tho Paris Courts aro in chaotic condition with 18,000 correctional cases, 20,000 civil cases, and 24,000 rent litigations awaiting jutlgniont. ■ The Court of Paris alone will have to sottlo 4500 cases before catching up with its schedule. In order to eliminate this hopeless accumulation of cases ( the now decree provides for tho creation of threo neAV Chambers, two correctional and one civil, in the Tribunal of tho Seine, the creation of a new Civil Chamber, an! Chamber of Appeals in the Paris Court of Appeals, the ostablishmont of ton now examining Magistrates' offices, and a temporary increase of tho personnel in a number of courts in order that the back cases may be handled as soon as possible. In spite of this increase in the number of couvts, it is claimed that the contemplated reorganisation will actually result in an important saving to the Government. The amount to be paid in salarios under the new system is estimated at considerably lower than under tho old system.

Tho tender of the Precision Engineering Co., Ltd., Wellington, has becu ncccptod by tho Post and Telegraph Department for the supply of motor number plates. The now contract is for five years. ■
