MOCK MAYORAL CONTEST

There "was a large attendance at the recent closing function in connection ■with the mock mayoral contest organised by the committee of the Trinity Methodist Church. The contest took the form of an installation of a mayor to his office, with all the trappings of state, and in the presence of the council and officials. It was announced during the function, which was splendidly carried out from the processional entry until the dignified exit, that the contest had raised the sum of £.223 9s 2d, with expenses amounting to £7 0s 7d.

Those taking part in the function were Mr. S. T. S. Martin (tho successful candidate), Messrs. E. C. Feltham, 8.A., and H. H. Brady (aldermen). Mr. Feltham invested the new mayor with the robes of office and the others placed the chain of office round the newlyelected mayor's neck. These gentlemen, being the defeated candidates, made suitable speeches of congratulation. Others connected with the ceremony were as follows: —Returning officer, Mr. A. A. Phelps; town clerk, Mr. W. Binct Brown, M.A.; city treasurer, Mr. J. A. Martin; city chaplain, Bey. Bramwell Scott; councillors, Mesdamos Phelps, Brown, and Eoberts, Misses Clark and Trcvethick, Messrs. Scrim-, geour, Lewis, Trevethick, and Hickling. Addresses were given by Messrs. S. Martin, W. B. Brown, J. A. Martin, and W. B. Scott. During the course of the evening four beautiful gavels of inlaid New Zealand woods, made and presented by Mr. S. Trevethick, and mounted with silver plates, suitably inscribed, wero presented to Messrs. S. Martin. E. C. Fettham, H. H. Brady, and the Eov. Mr. Scott.

The evening's entertainment, consisting of the installation of the mayor and the first meeting of the city council, gave splendid opportunity for the display of wit and wisdom.

An item that was appreciated was the arrival of a deputation from the ladies' guild, consisting of Mesdame3 W. B. Scott, J. A. Martin, and H. W. Smith. After being introduced by Councillor Brown they presented to the council the sum of £10 for the relief of financial distress within the bounds of "Trinity City."
