GYMNASTICS AT TRENTHAM
Under the auspices of the national council of the Y.M.CA.s of New SJealand, the third annual gymnastic championships arc being held at Trentham Camp during the Labour Day we&kend. Co-operating with the national council is the Now Zealand V.M.C.A. Physical Directors' Association; Representative teams have been entered by the Nelson, Hamilton, Christehurch, Pnlmerston North, and' Wellington Associations. The competitions will include set tests in horizontal bar, parallel bars, Roman rings, vaulting horse, mat tumbling, and calesthenics. The gymnastic, items took place this afternoon, and the calesthonics will take place on Monday morning. The value of the competitions can be seen in the improvement in tho general standard of gymnastic work since tho commencement of the competitions. Throughout the year the championships are not lost sight of, and the possibility of qualifying as a representative is a constant spur to those keen on gymnastics, During the few days spent together, every available spare moment is taken up by competitors in watching the loaders and gymnasts from other centres demonstrating some'of the new and. more difficult "stunts," and this feature of the gathering has proved to be most instructive. . .. .
•. Opportunity 'is being taken of the attendance of the physical department leaders to hold a conference on the general physical work of the association. Mr. C. G. Pogg, F.8.A.P.T., physical director of the ChriatDhurch Association, will bo in charge of tho conference,, and representatives will be present from Auckland, Hamilton, New Plymouth,..Palmerstou North, ■Wanganui. Masterton, Hutt Valley, Wellington, Christehurch, and Nelson. The competition will conclude!', with a basketball contest between tho various association teams. Tho cup for basketball is held by tho Wellington Association, and tho gymnastic ehump'ioußhiptf- by the GhriFtchurch Association.
