POINTERS FROM AUCKLAND

(Special from "Early Bird.")

AUCKLAND, This Day,

It is not very often that racing at Ellerslie gives a direct pointer to events at Waverley on Labour Day, but this season such is tho case. Lady Kyra was brought to Auckland to contest the Guineas, and after being at the tail o£ the field for most of the way she beat one horse home. On the second day the open sprint was her mission and she went an improved race, finishing eighth. The filly was much improved by her two races, and she may be able to participate in the finish of the sprint on Mondny at Waverley. It remains to be seen, however,, if she is forward enough to be able to defeat seasoned horses like The Tiger and Royal Routine, although the big concession in weight she will receive may be the decisive factor. Last spring Sporting Song had five outings as a two-year-old for three seconds and a third, after which the hard tracks began to find him out and a lengthy spell was necessary.. Sporting Song made his reappearance when he contested the hack seven furlongs at Ellerslie last Tuesday. He started from number two position, and while he jumped out all right he was soon cut off and in troilffile, drifting right back. His position was hopeless at the turn,_ but he was running on again in the straight, so that his eighth position in a, field of fourteen was not such a bad effort. His engagements at Waverley on Monday are in the Maiden and the hack five furlongs, and whichever event he is started in he should bo very hard to beat. Korokio and Carfex, second and fourth respectively- in the Mitehelson Cup last week, are to meet again in the Waverley Cup. Their failures ou the second day of the Auckland Meeting can be overlooked, for they both received very bad runs in a race that is always hard to win. Korokio finished a fine second to Solarium, beating the remainder just as easily as she herself was beaten. Carfex was right up with Korokio a furlong and- a half from home, but he weakened a,little further on. The weights in that Cup contest were Carfex

8.0 and Korokio 7.9, the latter impost including a 9lb penalty for her Otaki victory.' On the second day at Ellerslie the weights were 5.4 and 7.13 respectively, so that there was this time only 51b between them. In the Waverley Cup on Monday Carfex has 8,12 and Korokio 5.3, so that the latter has all the best of it, for she could not have her weight altered after her [second, placing last .Saturday.
