LAWN TENNIS
HUTT VALLEY AFFAIRS
A meeting of the management committee of the Hutt Valley Lawn Tennis Subassociation was held recently, those present being Mr. G. Winter (chairman), Messrs. G. Armstrong, A. I\. A. Clark, L. Evans, K. Milne, K. R. Soward, H. G. Flux (lion, treasurer), and A. G. Smith (hem. secretary). Nominations were received from 23 clubs, covering an area from Muritai to Upper llutt, and embracing Wainui-o-mata. Entries comprised CO teams and 4SO team players, which constituted a record since the inception of the Hutt Valley Subassociation. It was pointed out that the sub-association had approximately thirty courts at its disposal for match play, but it might have to hire further courts ,to accommodate matches on competition days. It was stated that the question of subassociation courts had been under review for some j'ears, and a scheme was mooted between the i Hutt Park committee and the sub-association for the laying down of twelve double and four single courts at Hutt* Park 'to be used on. Saturdays and holidays by the sub-association. It was1 proposed that the rental of the courts should be met by a special levy on clubs, two schemes being under consideration by all affiliated clubs. It was felt that the provision of these courts would fill a long recognised want, and it would leave all clubs with courts free for play for nonteam playing members. Members stood in silence as a mark of-respect to the memory of the deceased relatives of Sir A. Roberts (president of the sub-association) and -Mr. -G. Armstrong. . ..... Many tributes were paid to the work of Mr. R. A. Usmar for his sterling work on all matters concerning the sub-association, and regret was expressed at his coming departure to take up an appointment in Palriierston North. The vacancy created by Mr. Usmar'a departure was filled by the nomination to the management committee of Mr. J. Aiinear. of the Korokoro Club. Match play in the inter-club competition.will commence on November 3. The third and fourth grades will have extra matches because of the larger entries in these grades than the senior, ■ junior, and fifth grades. . • • • •
