SYNOPSIS OF LAST 24 HOURS.

The trough of a deep depression is now crossing the South Island and winds had turned to southerly by this morning in the far south, but elsewhere moderato to strong northerlles were still blowing. Rain has fallen in all parts of the Dominion except along the east coast south of Gisborne, a few scattered showers only having occurred so far in that area. In the western districts from Taranakl southwards there have been some heavy falls, Arthur's Pass having had as much as 470 points. Except where the southerly change has set in, temperatures have remained mild.
