STOCK SALES

MARKET GENERALLY FIRM

REPORTS. FROM CENTRES

The market for good quality fat and store livestock remained firm at the principal sales held in the .Dominion yesterday, though in some instances heavy yardinga, and poor quality caused prices to drop. There was little change in prices at the local sale, at which there was keen competition for good ewes. Though entries were larger than usual, there was a keen sale in both the beef and mutton sections at Addington. Beef values remained very firm at the VVestn'eld sale as the result of a short yarding, 200 less than last week being offered. The quality of the ox beef was good, but many cows and heifers were hardly up to standard. Although the yarding of sheep was on the short side, there were enough for requirements. The general quality was good, but old ewes are beginning to come in after being shorn and only a few woolly lots were offered. All good lines of wethers commanded recent prices, but ewes showed an easier tendency, especially to-, wards the end of the sale. At the Burnside sale there were heavier yardings in both the major sections. Of the entry of 248 fat cattle, anything lacking finish sold at slightly easier rates than last .week. Prime bullocks ahowed little change, and there was a strong demand for quality cows and heifers. A large yarding of store cattle met with a keen demand,; and one line sold up to £7. A good proportion of wethers was included in- the 1300 fat sheep penned, and competition was good throughout for all classes, except unattractive lines of ewes. Other qualities showed no change.
