BUILDING SUBSIDY
NEW ZEALAND MATERIALS
Applications continue to come in rapidly for tho Unemployment Board's building subsidy under the No. 12 scheme. Up to October 13, 1446 applications had been approved, and 196 declined. Most of the declined jobs will proceed in any case.- There are at present 143 applications which are under action by the board, in which no decision has yet been made. The total value of the applications approved is £951,000.
An interesting feature of the No. 12 scheme* is that the board's insistence on the use of New Zealand materials, enforced by a penalty for non-compli-aneo, is resulting in tho support of New Zealand industries to a marked extent. There will be 1270 New Zealand-made baths, 1228 Now Zealand-mado basins, 321 electric ranges, and 317 now gas stoves incorporated in the approved buildings, all of which are houses. Theso articles represent lines in which in previous schemes tho board has not insisted on the uso of New Zealand material.
