OFFICIAL OPENING
CENTENARY CELEBRATIONS
MELBOURNE, Octubcr 10.
Scenes of splendour day and night are promised for the official opening of the Centenary celebrations on Thursday by the Duke. His Boyal Highness lauds at Port Melbourne at 1.30 p.m. and will proceed along tho sea front to St. Kilda, then to the city via St. Kilcla Koad, which is expected to be lined with hundreds of thousands of people.
Tho opening ceremony on Parliament House steps at 3.30 p.m. will be attended by Federal and State members of Parliament, Judges in robes, and brilliantly uniformed navy, army, and air force officers. The Duke's first official act in Victoria will bo to declare the celebrations open.
Promptly at 8 p.m. the city streets will blaze with lights, when special^ illuminations on 8000 poles and pylons' will be switched on. Festoons of lights will be reflected in tho Biver Yarra from the lower spans of the Princes' Bridge, and fairy lights will gleam through the trees in Collins Street, A spectacular display of fireworks has been arranged on the Yarra banks, when a great; map of Arietoria bearing the word. "Welcome" will soar across the sky.
