NELSON, October 16.
A Nelson Ladies' Cricket Club was formed at an enthusiastic meeting last week. Tho following officers were elected:—President, Mrs. 11. C. Saunders; vice-presidents, Mesdamcs Boyle, Day, and Boyce, Messrs. 11. H. Dodds, Peters, A. K. Kingsford, Kees, Hay, A. Betts, G. Coleman, Healy, E. E. Ncale, W. U. H. Cole, C. Haggitt, S. Savage; secretary, Miss B. Turley; treasurer, Miss E. Burden; club captain, Miss 1). McGvath; committee, Misses N. Coombes. D. Stapp, M. Blair, M. Lynch, and M. Fauchelle. The City Council has granted the use of two grounds on which the various ladies' teams will play their competition matches. At a meeting of the Arbor-Day committee the City Engineer (Mr. J. G. Littlejohn) put forward a scheme for comprehensive planting on the Botanical Hill. He said that the name Botanical Gardens was misleading; the placedid not warrant that name. He was of the opinion that the present pine trees on the hill were not suitable, and that they should be replaced. His idea was to start from the top of the hill and work down, eliminating the pines and replacing them with such shrubs as rhododendrons and trees which would show autumn tints. The southern side would bo suitable for the planting of a fern grove. The work would probably take three or four years to complete, but when finished it would be a credit to the committee and the town. Councillor Russell said that at present the trees wore unsightly. They also impeded the view from tho top of the hill. People niarto the strenuous climb to tho summit only to find that the trees considerably blocked their vision. Mrs. Moncrieff was of the opinion that they should not plant in a place where there were already trees, but rather in sonic vacant section. The engineer stated that the council had no absolutely vacant section, though there was much space available in tho Old Cemetery. It was finally resolved to commence planting next Arbor Day on the Botanical Hill and in tho Old Cemetery, subject to the council's approval. The engineer is to prepare an elaborate scheme which he Will submit for tho committee's consideration.
