Fine conditions prevailed for the commencement of tho matcih play stages of the Australian amateur and professional golf championships at Eose Bay. The sixteen amateurs who qualified after the play in the open championship played 30-hole matches. Eesults are;—
Amateur. —First roui\d: P. Hughes defeated G. Thompson, 5 aiud 4; A. Waterson defeated .1. Allerton, 2 up; M. Ryan (Victoria) defeated P. Ellis, 6 and 5; T. McKriy defeated H. Williams (Victoria), 2 and 1; E. Apperley defeated G. Armstrong, 3 and 2; J. Ferricr defeated L. Nettlcfold (Tasmania), 3 and 2; E. Bettington defeated D. Esplin, 4 and 3; H. Hattcrsley defeated O. Meares, 4 and 3. Professional. —First round: D. Soutar defeated C. Brown (Queensland) at the 37th; J. Petterson defeated J. Cohen, 4 and 3; M. Kelly defeated E. Bolger, 2 and 1; V. Eichardson defeated T. Burke, 2 and 1; G. Gray defeated T. Heard, 4 and 2; W. Bolger (open champion) defeated N, yon Nsda (Queensland), 1 up; E. Naismith (Victoria) defeated F. Eyre, G and 5; W. Corry defeated D. Spence, 2 and 1. D. Soutar, the 52-yeasokl golf veteran, went out in 30, which is 5 under par, and caiii<} home in 41.
