EVENTS OF FEBRUARY

AUSTRIAN SOCIALISTS ,'

REQUEST FOR MEDIATION

(British Official Wireless.)

(Received October 16, 11 a.m.)

RUGBY, October 13,

Sir John Simon today received a deputation from tho National Council of Labour, the members of which urged the British Government to use their influence with tho Austrian Government on behalf of Austrian Socialists and trade unionists concerned with tho events of February last.

In reply the Foreign Secretary said that the Government had followed tho matter closely and with particular concern. Everyone would realise that the matters raised were largely tho domestic concern of the Austrian Government, but tho latter were, doubtless, aware of the- feelings which tho conditions described were bound to arouse in British public opinion. Tho deputation would be glad to learn that some of the Socialist leaders had in fact recently been released.
