ROYAL TOUR
CHILDREN'S GATHERINGS
THE NELSON DISTRICT.
(Special to the "Evening Post.")
■ KELSON, October 15. A letter from the Education Department recommending the gathering of children on the occasion of the Duke of Gloucester's visit to Nelson came befor* the Nelson Education Board today. The secretary (Mr. H. J. Thornton) said that replies received on the subject from the local headmasters showed that they regarded it as impracticable to bring the children in from the country districts owing to the fact that the .teachers and children would be "on holiday. Mr. E. J. Scantlebury said he was surprised at the replies from the head teachers. He hoped that the board would fall into line with the Department's suggestion and have the children brought in for a big gathering. The gala committee if asked would assist in looking after the children when they reached town and committeemen could be Bent out to bring the children in. Mr. Scantlebury said that the board should do its utmost to enable the children to gather to meet the Duke, for the event would long remain in their memories. It would be the occasion of their lives. Mr. Scantlebury moved that the board agree to the Department's request and do its utmost to make the function a success. The motion was lost, and Mr. J. H. Harkness then moved that the town children be organised by the gala committee, in conjunction with any tecahers available, and that the board endeavour to have the children in the country organised at Richmond, Brifrhtwater, and Wakefield to meet the Duke.
This motion was seconded by Mr. Knapp and carried.
