SUMMER SPORTS OPENING
BOWLING AND LAWN TENNIS
(Special to the "Evening Post") NELSON, October 15. Threatening rain on Saturday held off long enough for the various sporting fixtures to be completed, the Nelson Lawn Tennis Club and the Nelson Bowling Club holding their opening day. Rain set in during Saturday night and continued till this morning. A torrential downpour took place shortly after midday yesterday, when the Maitai and Brook streams rapidly rose to flood height. The rainfall up to 9 o'clock this morning for the weekend was 1.59 in. Today was overcast. About 8p bowlers participated in the opening of the Nelson Bowling Club's season. The president, Mr. W. J. Shand Smith, in the course of a brief speech, welcomed those present. The Maitai Bowling Club had a successful opening. Twelve new members were elected. Mr. P. J. McComish, president, of the club, welcomed the" visitors and thanked Air. D. M. Rees for presenting a bowl bag to the winner of the handicap singles competition. Bowlers from Wakefield, Richmond, Mapua, 'and Motueka responded on behalf of their respective clubs and congratulated Mr. J. Chapman, green, supervisor, on the condition of the ° The Richmond Bowling Club also opened its season, the president (Mr. J. G. Cressey) welcoming members. In spite of the somewhat wintry weather some 130 members and visitors made n gay scene at the Nelson Lawn Tennis Club's courts on Saturday on the occa:ion of the official opening of the season. The president, Mr. T. E. Manns-ell, wished all a pleasant season. Combined doubles were played till late in the afternoon. The courts are in excellent condition though somewhat on the soft side after the re-' tent rains, and were favourably commented on by members and visitors. .At the annual meeting of the Lawn Ttunis Association the election of officers resulted:—President, Mr. C. G. Kirk (.reelected); vice-presidents, Messrs. H. H, Broad, Betts, Duncan, Rout, and Wilkias (re-elected); secretary and treasurer, Mr. Cannington (re-elected); lion, auditor, Mr. Hodgson (re-elected); delegate to New Zealand Association, Mr. Mayo (re-elected); committee, Messrs. Dee, Smith, McDowell, Townsend, AVilliamson, Johnston, and a Motueka delegate yet to be elected. ■ Once more the country in the Waimea has received a thorough soaking, and dairy farmers everywhere are smiling at tho wonderful growth of grass. The Waimea;/ certainly look beautiful, with abundant growth everywhere, but the cropping man is finding the rain rather too abundant for his needs. Just when the ground is workable more rain comes along and as .1 result the sowing of crops has been seriously retarded. Some of the growing crops, 100, are suffering from excessive moisture, peas being the worst in this respect. This seasoa pea-growers have had a very bud run. The earliest crops, which bring the highest prices, were- in many cases spoilt by the heavy fall of snow, and later crops have been rendered worthless by excessive rain. If the present conditions continue peas will continue to suffer; in any case it looks as if they will be poor in quality and high in price. Tomato-growers are .busy setting out their young plants as weather conditions permit, and these arc making good growth. Provided there is not another cold snap v.-ith a late frost, the crops should make rapid progress, as growing conditions could scarcely be more favourable. What is now required is a spell of warm, sunny weather. _^______^__ I
