ENIF AND OTAURU KING
En if and Otauru King, who fought out the issue in the Novice Stakes at ilasteiton on Saturday, were the two biggest liorsßS in the race, and from point of size they would hold their own in' any Held of horses. Both arc types ivlio may develop really good handicap form later on. Knif is a four-year-old brown gelding by Thoiuond from the Boniform mare Bonny Louisa, who was the first olFspring of the Ciimp Fire male Lady Louisa, the dam subsequently of Boy, Henna, and Malahat. Ijonny Louisa traces back to the old colonial Woodstock taproot, which, while not now frequently represented among winners, still survives to produce occasional good horses. Enif is being raced by Mr. V. E. Bryant, the owner also of Arikira and I'hcou, and who trains his horses himself. Enif. had been expected to be hard to beat on the first day, but a long float trip from Foxton that morning probably prevented his showing his best. Otauru King, who is also owned in Foxton by ?.J.r. F. S. Easton, but who is trained at Trentham by J. Ayres, was having his first racing last week, and his showings were-therefore all the more creditable. He is <i five-year-old brown gelding by Acre from a mare by Strowan from another unnamed mare by The Artist, so that it is difficult to discover exactly what are his real antecedents. It certainly does not seem as if his female lino has been raced much1 in the last few decades, which, if his promise is any criterion, may be more than a pity. He was bred by his owner, and was sent to Trentham to be prepared eventually for jumping, because of his size and strength.
