FIRST SETTLERS
MEMORIAL OF LANDING
QUEEN STREET SITE
On the recommendation of the. Beach Beautifying Committee, the Petone Borough Council last evening decided that Queen Street would be the best place to mark the landing of the first settlers on January 22, 1840.
The chairman of the committee (Councillor R. W. Toomath) said that it was proposed to invite the co-opera-tion of the Early Settlers' Association, and it was hoped that by the time of tho Wellington centenary, or possibly earlier, if finance was available for the development of tho bench area, the memorial would be creeled at the end of Queen Street, and would have suitable surroundings. It was recognised by the committee that the precise designation of the spot was a matter of great difficulty—indeed, it was almost impossible—but tho very best advice had been sought. However, the exact spot of the landing was notof paramount importance; the main thing was to mark the fact tluat the first landing of settlers was made on the beach at Petone.
