RANCITOTO TRAGEDY

Though v largo force of police, settlers, and bushmon is scouring the country near tho scone of the Rangitoto tragedy, there is still no trace of the missing Maori. Heavy rain of fifteen hours' duration on. Sunday night makes the task of tho searchers more difficult. Tho area of the search is being widened and a careful watch kept on all roads leading to the scene of tho tragedy, especially that loading to Otowa, whore the girl lived with whom the Maori Avas infatuated, The debris loft by' tho fire at the Davenport's homestead was thoroughly searched for fresh evidence.

When the body of Albert Davenport was found it was guarded by the victim's three dogs, and one, an Airedale, becamo hostile when the body was romoved. He was calmed, and when tho body was removed in a car the three dogs followed- in procession. Albert was a big powerful man, aud an experienced bushman.
