THE POLITICAL PROBLEM
(To the Editor.)
Sir, —I see "Fusionist" it> still complaining about the delay in holding a caucus of tho Coalition parties, from which ho expects some alteration or addition to tho personnel of the present Cabinet and a united front of all tho anti-Socialist elements in the House, in order to more effectively fight tho "Socialist menace." It is obvious to me that "Fusionist" has already got what ho is asking for. Tho mere alteration or addition to the men in the Cabinet cannot make any, material improvement. It is new and radical progressive measures that are needed, but no member of the Coalition will introduce such. We have, therefore, only the Opposition to look to ■for relief. I happen to know of a political party of the same colour as our Opposition, and its policy is identical with the New Zealand Labour Party's policy. That party is now the Government of another little democratic country in the.north of Europe, and it is gradually getting its radical and progressive measures placed on tho Statute Book of that country, with very beneficial results to all sections of the people. About twelve mouths ago tho total number of unemployed in Denmark was over 190,000; last July the number was '78,000, and this had been achieved in spite of the quotas imposed by tho British Government on Danish butter, ham, and eggs. Furthermore, in view of the fact that tho area of the country is only about tho size t one of our provinces in New Zealand and carries a population of threo millions, its soil, which is not nearly as <rood as New Zealand, has been cultivated for moro than a thousand years, and yet there is no poverty thoro anything like what wo havo here. Can you, Sir, or "Fusionist," wonder at mo stating, that I am thoroughly dissatisfied with the misgovernment of this country, which is favoured by Nature. —I am, etc., SOCIAL DEMOCRAT. [This letter, which covers much of tho ground covered by tho correspondent in previous . letters, has been abridged.] S
