"THE WRONG WAY"
(To tho Editor.)
Sir, —I make bold to take you to tiisk over your statement in the sub'leader, in which you say, "The Government should have given members an opportunity of saying 'Yes' or 'No' to the proposal for reducing tho unemployment tax." I am under the impression that every member's salary is subject to this tax. If this is correct, then may I ask you why waste the time of the House by seeking a division on the matter, as it is a shipload of gold to a pinch of tea that the answer would have been "Yes." The members of the House have a very hard row to hoe on the salary they receive, so the reduction of 2d in the shilling would certainly never havo been sneered at by them, especially the members of the Opposition. Tho Opposition have made more noise over the reduction than any other people ir* tho Dominion. Why? No one would hope or wish that tho workers would suffer one penny piece by this reduction—but they won't, despite what the Opposition say. In the meantime let us watch tho treatment of the Unemployment Board a bit more closely; thus we can prove the logic or otherwise of the objections to the reduction.—l am, etc.,
TOM MIX.
