SOUTH ISLAND UNION

CHBISTCHUECH, September 28.
The annual meeting of tho South Island Motor Union was held today, Mr. l'\ W. Johnston presiding. Mr. M. H. Wynyard, motorists' representative on tlio Main Highways Board, was present. Officers were elected as follows: — President, Mr. F. W. Johnston; vicepresidents, Dr. S. B. Gibbs, and Messrs. J. B. Haigh and J. Palliser; executive, Messrs. F. W. Freeman, H. C. Harley, B. Falck, J. S. Hawkes, W. E. Carey, B. H. Parker, and E. J. Bradshaw; auditor, Mr. A. Donaldson. Proposals formulated by the Transport Department after a conference of traffic officers, and containing amendments to the Motor Vehicles Act, 1924, were before the meeting and were considered in relation to recommendations from the North Island Motor Union. The recommendations of the North Island Union were in the main adopted. It was stated that lights and brakes would probably be a subject of discussion with the Transport Department, traffic officers, and the Motor Unions of the North and South Islands Dr. Gibbs moved as a recommendatiou to the proposed conference that lamps be so focused that the main beam of light hits the ground within 150 feet of the car. This was carried. The following motion by Mr. Johnston was carried unanimously: "That this union, in view of the improved financial position of the Dominion as evidenced by the partial restoration of the cut in Civil Service salaries and other acts of the Government, again reiterates its protest against the continued diversion of motor taxation iv augmentation of the Consolidated Fund, and demands the restoration of all motor taxation to the Highways Fund."
From property left more than 150 years ngo to help children of Hulwell, near Hitchin, Hertfordshire, to start in life, the income has risen from £60 to £3000 a year. Out of this almshouscs and village halls have been built, endowments have been made, and grants to twenty children a year are paid.
