THE ULSTER GRAND PRIX

One of the most remarkable performances over put up in a motor-cyclo raco was achieved by W. V. Rusk, when he won the Ulster "Grand Prix, at Belfast. Although held up through mechanical trouble for several minutes, which put him back to fifth place, Rusk, who was riding a Velocette, roared* past the finishing post, having reached a speed of 88.38 m.p.h., in a time of 2hr 47min —a record.
A remarkable feature of the day's racing was J. H. Simpson's success in gaining first place on a Norton in- the junior class, with a speed of 84.93 m.p.h. (2hr 39min 19see) —another record. G. E. Nott, on a Rudge,-was first in the lightweight class at a speed of 77.08 m.p.h. (2hr 39min 35sec)j He broke the lap record with a 6peed of 78.8 i m.p.h. Tho race was divided into three classes —500 c.c., senior; 350 c.c, junior; and 250 c.c, lightweight. In the second lap Kusk wont fiat out all. tho way. round and smashed the Tecord by averaging 91.34 m.p.h.-—the first time in the history of the race that over 90 m.p.h. has been returned as a fulllap speed. His time; 13min 28see, compared with tic previous best of 13min 43kcc.
In the -fifth lap Husk thrilled the crowd with a wonderful display of riding. He covered a lap at 92.02 m.p.h., thus breaking the record which he had himself created only a little time previously.
Newman tried to overtake Simpson in the junior class, and created a new 350 c.c. record by covering a lap in limin 15sec at a speed of 86.31 m.p.h. On the next lap Newman broke that record by knocking off five seconds. Ho covered tho twenty miles in 14min lOsee —a speed of 86.32 m.p.h. .
