TURF NEWS IN BRIEF
The only sire claiming more than one representative in the Great Northern Guineas is Whirlwind, who has not yet had a classic winner.
The Paladin—Fairform gelding who was entered for the New Zealand Cup and still remains in the Dunedin Guineas has been named Tauramai.
A yearling half-sister by British Empire to Tauramai has been named Faerie Queene. The same owner's filly by the same sire out of Sparkling Eyes is to race as Britomartis, another spelling for Britomart, warrior-huntress iv Spenser's "Faerie Queene."
The name claimed for the ■ Whirlwind — Legality gelding who remains in the field for the Great Northern Guineas is Whirling. This chestnut is a half-brother to the speedy Impasto, and he will run in the colours of the Hamilton sportswoman Mrs. R. T. Reid. A younger colt fullbrother to Whirling claims au A.R.C. Welcome Stakes engagement.
A Dunedin two-year-old that is attracting a great deal of attention at present is a half-sister by Paper Money to Ventrac, the property of Mr. L. C. Hazlett. This filly is considered to be the best looker down that way for many years. She is also well forward and is reported to be very speedy. Sixteen horses remain in the Great Northern Guineas, including Pin Money, Gay Blonde, Burnish, and Mother Superior. Gay Blonde did not contest the Wanganui Guineas, but the form disclosed in that classic was so poor that she must be given a chance at Ellerslie. Rerepai, another to meet the final payment, had two good wins over sprint courses at Wanganui, and with his condition he may get a mile better than most of them. AH continues to go well with Kiltowyn, who is striding along with great freedom in his work and improving in condition each week, says a northern writer. He will probably have his- first race of the season at the Spring Meeting at Ellerslie, where his engagements include the Mitch elson Cup, tho Flying Handicap, and the King Edward Memorial Handicap. The jumpers Wee Pat and Thespis are getting tlirough their work in good style at Ellerslie, and they will probably make a reappearance at the Spring Meeting next month. All going well, Wee Pat and Thespis are likely to be competitors m the steeplechase events at tho Summer Meeting. News of the Wellington Cup winner Compris is to hand from H. Jones, the Melbourne jockey, who arrived on holiday to the Victorian capital last week. Jones says racing is flourishing in India, but that Compris is no longer a racehorse, being able to gallop "no faster than one can kick one's hat." Jones will return _to India for tho beginning of the racing season in December. The three-year-old Quien Sabe, who hud to be placed on the easy list recently as the result of a fall on the track, has made n good recovery and is again working regularly under tho direction of G. Holland at Ellerslie, states a northern report. Quien Sabe is by Night Raid from Orma. and is one of the biggest horses in commission at the northern centre. ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS. "K.O."—K., £1 14s. "Gordon Richards."—Your suggestion is the ideal one, but it is impracticable and next to impossible to put it into operation here. For example, practically no riding engagements have been announced for any of tha meetings, and a big proportion of them would not have be"en made till this morning. Jockeys are not retained for certain owners in the Dominion as they are in England, and even where certain riders usually ride for certain stables deductions could not be taken far j nlong this line before more mistakes would be made than were worth the | risk. It is, of course, easier to discover arrangements prior to the few big metropolitan meetings, but beyond this little is certain hero till immediately befora the racing, (
