CHEAP JAPANESE GOODS
ARE PROFITS TOO HIGH?
QUESTION IN HOUSE
In tho House of Representatives today Mr. W. H. Field (Government, Otaki) asked the Minister of Industries and Commerce whether the Government would, through the agency of the Board of Trade or otherwise, take steps to protect the unsuspecting purchasing public by restraining the imposition by certain storekeepers of unconscionable profits on cheap Japanese goods imported into New Zealand. Mr. Forbes replied on behalf of Mr. Masters: —"No specific complaints have recently been lodged with the Department of Industries and Commerce in respect of the prices charged for Japanese goods sold , within the Dominion, and usually competition between various sellers is sufficient to effectively control ithe position. If the honourable member can advise the Department of any instances in which it is/suggested that unreasonably high prices are being charged either in respect of Japanese goods or otherwise, the subject will receive immediate attention."
