STORMY WEATHER
AND GENERAL RAIN
Special forecast for Wellington:— Strong south-easterly winds. Weather cold and squally, with
considerable rain likely,
The cyclonic depression which was lying yesterday, to the north-west of Now Zealand was centred this morning off Cape Maria Van Diemcn. Sinco it has intensified considerably, the general forecast issued at noon today is for south-easterly winds about Cook Strait, with north-easterlies to easterlies elsewhere,/but there will bo a general change to southorlies soon. Winds will be moderate to strong generally, gale force being reached in places about and to tho north of Cook Strait. The weather will be unsettled and dull with heavy ;rain from Nelson and Marlborough northward. Stormy conditions with some flooding of rivers are likely inthe Auckland Province. The weather will becomo colder and snow is likely on the ranges. Tho depression .has caused northeasterly to easterly winds to become strong over the northern half of the North Island, .and heavy rain has already fallen in that area. Since, last night the rain has spread to most other parts of the Dominion. In tho Cook .Strait region a change to south-easterly wind»..has already taken placo with tho usual fall in temperatures, ;.- Auckland had mild and fair weather yesterday, although there was a cqnsideraiile amount of cloud. A northeasterly wind gradually freshened and somo rain fell during tho night. The woatHer this morning was dull and; threatening with a strong north-easter-ly wind. Wellington had a mild'and cloudy day with a modorato'to'fresh north-wester-ly wind. Although rain threatened at times, nono fell. Tho wind changed to a light southerly at 7 p.m., and sinco early this morning a south-easterly brcezo has prevailed with dull weather. Christchurch also had a dull day with a south-westorly breeze. Rain began to fall about 5.30 p.m. yesterday,' and at 9 a.m. today it \was still raining with an easterly breeze, the fall up to that time measuring 15 points.
Tho weathor in Dunedin was fine yesterday morning, but the afternoon was dull and some heavy rain fell during the night. Rain -was still falling at 9 a.m. today, the wind being a northeasterly breeze.
