FOREIGN BUTTER
BRITISH IMPORTS UP
(From "The Post's" Representative.) LONDON, August 17., • The Trade and Navigation Returns published on August 15 give further evidence that foreign countries are increasing their exports of dairy produce to the British market, notwithstanding tho Ottawa Agreements and tariffs.
During the first seven months of 1934, imports of European butter rose by 21 per' cent, over the corresponding period of last year.. During tho. same period, Empire countries increased their butter exports to Britain by 17 p«r cent. The incre'asc of foreign butter is due mainly to the banning of imported butter by German}', previously a large consumer. .
It is significant that tho total increase in supplies from Continental quarters of 476,000cwt is largely accounted for by Bussia (47,000cwt) 'Denmark (82,000cwt), Sweden (95,000cwt). Holland. (81,000cwt), and .. Poland (29,000cwt), all employing some form of subvention. • ■
Poland has resumed exporting after a considerable interval.
