FRUIT INDUSTRY
CONFERENCE CONCLUDES
The annual conference of the New Zealand Fruitgrowers' Federation, Ltd., concluded yesterday afternoon. " : :
It was resolved "that in view of the present position between Australia and New Zealand regarding citrus importations representations be made against the introduction of fresh citrus fruits from any area! ofi country where the fruit fly is known tb.-exist." ■
Delegates agreed on the importance of continuing the fruit research work, which was stated- already to, have been of .immense value to the industry, and. decided to ask the Government to increase the orchard tax from Is to 2s per ;acre, the additional amount so obtained to be devoted to research activities. The conference placed on record its' appreciation of the work done by the citrus committee of the New Zealand Institute of Horticulture and ita citriculturist, Mr. G. A. Green. In view, of the great value of the work to the growing citrus industry it was decided to urge the Government to continue its maintenance grant. Other remits passed included the following:— . "That the federation approach the Minister of Railways with a view to obtaining a reduction in freights on vegetables and fruit, with special reference.to export fruit and small parcels." "That the Railways Board be approached with a view to securing a reduction in freight on oil for frost fighting." "That the federation endeavour to obtain a reduction in freights "on inter-island steamers."
"That application be made to the Government for a guarantee on export sufficient to meet the cost of production.".
"That the matter of the guarantee receive early attention with a view to getting a permanent arrangement as against an annual readjustment."
