DAY IN PARLIAMENT
UNEXPECTED DEVELOPMENT
There was an unexpected development in the House of Kepresentatives late last evening, when a further interim report of the Company Promotion Commission was tabled.- The main recommendation of the report was for authority to inquire into a further twelve companies, the principal company being jSTcw Zealand Kedwood Forests Ltd. It was announced by the Minister of Finance (the Bt. Hon. J. G. Coates) that an Order in Council has been gazetted adding these companies to others mentioned in the schedule of the Companies (Special Investigation) Act, which was passed recently. The tabling of the reporij, came as a surprise to members, who had no inkling of the matter before Mr. Coates made a statement when the House resumed after the supper adjournment at 10 o'clock. ' .
For the greater part of. tho clay in tho House the Budget was debated, though little fresh ground was broken. The debate was interrupted for the presentation of the Commission's report.
In the Legislative Council, the Gaming Amendment Bill was read a second time, and the committee stages of tho Bill are to be taken today.
The House rose at midnight.
