GAMING BILL
COMING BEFORE COUNCIL
MAJORITY IN FAVOUR
The Gaming Amendment Bill, which provides for a double totalisator and tho publication of dividends, will come up for second reading in the Legislativo Council this afternoon.
Tho sponsor of the measure is tho Hon. E. R. Davis, who is confident that it will receive the assent of the Council. The chief opponent of the Bill is the Hon. L. M. Isitt, but it is not likely that ho will gain the support of more than half-a-dozen members.
In the-event of the Bill being passed by the Upper House, it is expected that it will be given special facilities Uy the. Government in tho House of Representatives. It will bo remembered that last year the Prime- Minister (the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes) moved that urgency bo accorded tho passage of a Gaming Amendment Bill, which was being promoted by Mr. X F. Healy (Government, Wairau), and the motion was defeated, but it is not likely that Mr. Forbes will be caught napping a second time. Mr. Healy's Bill provided also for the telegraphing of bets to racecourses, and it was this provision that aroused the strongest opposition.
