MISS GAISFOKD'S FEAT,
WOMEN'S COURSE RECORD
SYDNEY, September 4
In the first qualifying round of the Associates' Australian golf championship today Miss B. Gaisford (New Zealand) was out in 38, and looked like establishing startling, figures, but missed, many putts to take 41 coming home. However, her 79 was a new course record, which enabled her to lead the field. Miss Oliver Kay (New Zealand) and Miss McLeod (Victoria) each, went round in 82, Miss Ebert, Miss Lascelles, and Mrs. McKay, 83, Miss Wray and Miss J. Hammond, 84. The course was heavy after the recent deluge, and there were many. patches of -water, which militated against good scoring. There is a 36-holes stroke handicap event called the Challenge Bowl running in conjunction with, the Australian championship. Miss Gaisford, with a net 77, is running second, but Miss Kay is seven strokes behind the leader, Miss N. Murdoch, whose seoro is 76. The second qualifying round of the cham pionship, which also counts for th» Challenge Bowl, will be played tomorrow. The following team has been selected to represent. Australia in New Zealand' for the Tasman Cup:—Miss L. ,Wray (New South Wales, captain), Miss Joan Hammond (New South Wales), Miss Mona Macleod (Victoria), Miss Shirley Tolhurst (Victoria). The fifth member of the team will be announced later.
