FRUIT AND VEGETABLES
Reference to the market conditions of Wellington fruit ami vegetables during last month is made in reports from tlie fruit inspectors to the Director of the Horticulture Division of the Department of Agriculture as follows: — Apples were in good supply, but the quality of most lines was poor, the fruit generally being of poor colour and in many instances shrivelled. The source of supply is. mostly fruit kept in ordinary storage, very little arriving from cool store. Prices are still low, due mainly to poor quality fruit offering. Delicious are the only variety showing slight improvement in values. Fair quantities of pairs have beon arriving and opening up in fair condition, the fruit generally consisting of small sizes. New Zealand-grown lemons have been in fair supply, and values have eased slightly. The condition has in the main been good. Small linos of poormai) oranges have been arriving during the month, and these mainly have been of fair quality, though sizes have been' on the small side. Vegetable* of most classes, both root and green, have been in failsupply, and the conditions generally have been satisfactory. The demand, however, is poor. At Christchurch the vegetable market has been well supplied with practically all seasonal varieties of vegetables, potatoes have been very plentiful, and onions have been in ample supply. Satisfactory supplies of both hothouse and outsidegrown lettuce have also been available, and these have sold well. Ihe demand has been quite good, and prices have been generally fair to good. 4t Dunedin local fruit has been practically confined to apples, pears, and lemons.
