TRAFFIC CONTROL

WILLIS STREET LIGHTS

THE LEFT-HAND TURN

A request that motorists should be allowed to make the left-hand turn from Willis Street into Lambton Quay although the light on the Bank of Zealand corner might be showing red, was not viewed favourably by the Automobile Association (Wellington) at its meeting last night.

The secretary (Mr. W. A. Sutherland) said the bylaw stipulated that while the red light was showing a car must not cross tho intersection. There were times when traffic could be permitted to pass from Willis Street into Lambton Quay with perfect safety although the red light was showing at the Bank of New Zealand corner, but there wore other periods when it would be dangerous, particularly when a tramcar was Tationary in Willis Street, and a motor-car was forced to -ake up a position behind it. Tho motorist could not see if there was any traffic turning from Customhouse Quay into Lambton Quay or any pedestrians who might bo crossing the street. He thought no action should bo taken in the matter.

The chairman (Mr. E. A. Batt) said that he was not in favour of the suggestion. The association, ho said, must assist the traffic department to the best of its ability. If such a request was granted the pedestrian would not have a chance. "You can't operate traffic satisfactorily with automatic control, particularly on tram routes," Mr. Batt added.

Other members also opposed the suggestion.
