VISIT TO RUSSIA

(To the Editor.)

Sir,—Mr. E. J. Dyer has replied to our letter which set out certain facts which we did, not (as he says) "claim" to have been concealed, but of which the general public were not fully aware. Those who have protested against the refusal to grant leave have assumed that the object of Mr.'Riske's visit is solely for tho purpose of studying educational methods —whereas he is admittedly leading a delegation to Russia the members of which are, expected to '(jarry out political action on their return to New Zealand. Tho invitation to send this delegation- did not mention study of tlic . education system, and the general instructions as to these F.S.U. delegations clearly show the purposes for whicii they are organised. ' Mr. Dyer disclaims the views we quoted As published in tho official organ of the Communist Party, but we" quoted from an article under his owh signature—wherein occurs the following description of ,the objective of this delegation: "Comrades to remember the obicctive," he wrote, "a. representative workers' delegation shall carry our greetings to our Russian comrades when on November 7 they march ,in their millions celebrating the overthrow of capitalism."; These are'his own words; we presume- he means what he

From the language used in the gone- J ral instructions of the National Bureau of the T.S.U. there can bo no possible doubt but that ono objeetivo of theso delegations ia to work against our political and social system on their return to New Zealand. For this reason alone tho authorities are justified in not helping the movement. Does Mr. Dyer suppose that tlio Soviet Government wto«M grnnt Icnvc to its servants, to co abroad loading delegations whoso übioctivo was to return to Kuspin ami work against the Soviet system?—"We ' UC> *"' N.Z. WELFABI2 LEAGUE. August 31.
