CHOICE OF DEFENDER

RAINBOW BEATS YANKEE

NEW YOBK, August 2<

A. message' from Newport, Rhodo Island, states that the yacht Raiubow, Mr. Harold Vanderbilt's new candidate for the defence of the America Cup, today defeated tho leading aspirant for that honour, Yankee, skippered by Mr. Charles Francis •> Adams, by three minutes seven seconds, over a 30-mile triangular course. The result somewhat complicated the task of tho committee empowered with the selection of the defender. It was Yankee's first defeat in the final trials, and temporarily placed Bainbow in the lead so far. as the trials are concerned.

Bainbow now has won three races and lost one, beating Mr. Frederick Prince's Weotamoe, which is now eliminated, twice, and Yankee once. Yankee has defeated Bainbow /dud Weetamoe, and lost to Bainbow.
