DIATOMOUS'S DEFEAT

LAST BUT ONE TO FINISH

(From "Vedette.") SYDNEY, iugust 21,

Diatomous was hardly a good New Zealand advertisement at Moorcficld 'on Saturday. In fact, ho was-a boom which burst with a particularly sullen report. In not a very strong field of sprinters, ridden by M. McCarten and drawn on the rails, he was very solidly backed by a number of Sydneyfs leading punters and to such,a volume that he finished at odds on.

In the race Diatomous failed to get away from the suburban sprinting types and first Bouyeo and then Some Coy. worried him. In fact Diatomous did not last until the straight, where the winner, Eoman Spear, dominated the race and Diatomotis was going back.

Diatomous beat'only one horse home, Bouyeo, who was forcing the pace early.

It is probable that Diatomous, will be improved by the race. He looked burly and pulled up hardly as well as could be wished. His trainer, A. E. Neale, said that the boree had galloped very moderately at Canterbury Park prior to the Moorefiekl Meeting, ,so that the display would not come as a. surprise to him.
