UNFAMILIAR NAMES

COMBINED HUNTS MEETING

SEASON'S FRESH MAIDENS

It is only natural that at the opening of every season considerable new material should bo paraded before the keen eyes of an anticipating public, but it is not often that there is such an array of unknown or next to unknown blood as promises to step out at the combined Hunts Meeting at New Plymouth on Thursday and Saturday. In every event except the open sprint there are new names, and the hunters' items particularly must present a complete puzzle to those who are not acquainted with the form at the hunting meets during the last few months. — LIKELY THREE-YEAR-OLDS. More than half the field for the maiden' event, the Wereroa Scurry, have done very little if any racing. Four or five of this section are well bred three-year-olds, and it is just possible that one or two of them will make bold showings, as the form of the tried division is not particularly good. Three-year-olds among the little-known acceptors for the Scurry are Red Fox, Chikara, Friesland, Spender, and Ringside. Red Fox had one start at New Plymouth last February, but the others do not appear to have raced as two-year- , olds. ' ! Keel Fox is a chestnut gelding by Hunting Song from the Heather Mixture mare Heather Spray, so that he is a full-brother to Lavington and to Kentucky Song. He is also closely related to the recent Grand National Hurdles winner Huutique, as Heather Spray and Huntique's dam Gazelia are half-sisters. Red Fox was one of Mr. Game Carringtou's offering at last year's Trentham sales and lie was bought cheaply for 25 guineas by Mr. A. S. Cleland, of Stratford. Chikara is a three-year-old chestnut gelding by the Tea Tray sire Kiosk from the Camp Fire mare Pouma, a full-sister to Yoma and herself a crack sprinter about Taranaki seven or eight years ago. Chikara was bred by the late Mr. A. W - Budge and he was purchased from the estaie by Mr. A. Xarndley. Friesland is the Australian-bred Friarsdale—Fluency brown colt whom the Hawera trainer O. Cox brought back with him from Australia last year, and a high opinion is held about him. He has done a fair amount of work on the Hawera tracks and it will now be interesting to observe how he shapes on the racetrack. It is probable, however, that he will not be near his best till some time later on in th season, as he is not be; ng hurried. Spender is a bay colt by "Lord Quex from the Boniform mare Gold Painting, and he is'thus a half-brother to Tintoretto, Imitation, and Diorama (A.J.C. Canonbury Stakes), all winners. Gold Painting, who is a full-sister to Bon Bord (dam of Count Cavour and Gustavo), was one of the Flaxmere Stud mares, and she was sold at the dispersal (carrying a foal to Lord Qnex, now Spender) to Mrs. A. M Rutherford, of Eketahunn, who disposed of the foal to Mr. H. J. D. Power, of New Plymouth, in whose colours he will race. Ringside is a brown gelding by Poton from the Birkenhead mare Mollecn Oge. the dam also of Crubeen (dam of Cottesmorc) and of Limeen. Mollecn Oge. formerly owned by Mr. J. Glccson. is now j being bred from by Messrs. A. F. Aldio | and M. T. Saywell, of New Plymouth, and ■ Ringside will carry their iaekct. j OTHERS LITTLE KNOWN. j iSeveral maiden four-year-olds are also' in the field. Gold Mission is a bay mare by Royal Divorce from the Danilol mare Lotuslof (a half-sister to Glenlotus and Anchor) and she is owned by Mrs. E M Downs, of Waverley. Bay Sand, who has had^a few prior races, is a bay. geld ing by Sandstar from the Husbandman mare Torokaba, and he is owned by Mr C N. Taplin, of Eltham. Poterie is a four-year-old bay mare by Potoa from the Nassau mare Erie, a ver satile performer who won at all departments and was particularly successful over the country, winning big steeples vi Riccarton, Trentham, and Wanganui Poterie is held on lease from her breeder (Mr. F. Sarten) by Mr. A. R. Standish. t1" -j New Plymouth solicitor. Rose Ray is a four-year-old chestnut maro by Chief Ruler from the Farasi mare Rosie Desmond, so she is n fullsister to Just So and a half-sister to Kiosk ' and Mireusonta. She is owned by her breeder, Mr. T. Ltipton. Sandlarb is a foiir-yeav-oIJ browu geld-j ing by Sandstar- from the Gazeley mare Kissing Cup," and he is owned by Miss J. O'Brien, for whom he has borue the colours on two or three previous occasions. Peter's.Pence is a four-year-old chestnut gelding by Mercian King from the Tluirnham mare Lady Thurnham, a half-sister to Statuette, with whom Mr. G-. D. Beatson won an A.R.C. Railway and two W.R.C. Telegraphs, and ho will carry Mr. Beatson's colours. In one previous start, at the Hawke's Bay Hunt Meeting, he was backed down'to second favourite and finished fourth, so that there is evidently more than average promise about him. Among the older unraced maidens engaged on Thursday are High Exchange, a five-year-old brown mare by Lapidary from n Quin Abbey mare held on lease by Mr. J. T. Wade (owner of Moatoa); and Queen Agnes, a seven-year-old bay mare by Antagonist from Sage Queen owned by Mrs. T. Terrill. The remaining three in the maiden acceptance are Colossal, Harvest Moon, and Genera] Quex, who have each revealed likely form on occasions. Harvest Moon has recently been schooled, but on the showing he made at Foxton in June he should have a great chance of opening his account here. HUNT CUP ASPIRANTS. The three hunters' events introduce such a, plethora of new names that it could serve little purpose to deal with them all. However, it might bo of some valuu to glance over the list for the Egmont-Wanganui Hunt Cup Steeplechase Lucess is a well-known cross-country performer who has turned to hunting this season, and in this class he would require only to be half the horse he was twelve months ago to win. Three years ago he was actually favourite fox- the Great Northern Steeples, finishing third. Don Erma is another useful hunter, and last May beat Riotous in the Grandstand Steeples at Wanganui. Flower Bag (winner of tho recent I'aUiiranga Hunt Cup) and Cardhu (winner of the Riddiford Hunters' Steeples at the Rangitikei Hunt) are half-brothers, both having clone well in point-to-point races during the winter prior to their successes on the racecourse. Flower Bag, who is held on lease by Mr. T. Lupton, is a nine-year-old gelding by Gasbag, and Cardhu, held on lease by Mr. X MeKT Duncan, is a seven-year-old gelding by Danilof. The leases are from diiferent owners, so it does not appear as if there is any joint interest requiring the bracketing of the pair at New Plymouth. Coonoor is owned by Mr. G. D. Beatson, who had success on the track two years ago with Luna Lux Hard Gold, now 11 years old. will be running agnin in the colonrs of his former owner Mr J. R. Northcott. of Feilding Rory Mnr. a newcomer to the came. is owned in Hawke's Bay by Mr C. E Twist.

Among the unfamiliar names is that of Anchises, an eight-year-old bay gelding by Patroba^ (a son of St. Clements) from an unknown mare. He is owned by Mr. H. L. Garner, of New Plymouth. Ngareta, winner of the point-to-point at New Plymouth a month or co ago, is_ a seven-year-old chestnut maro by ChaminiHle (a son of Sylvia Park) from a maro by Camp Fire out of .1 Stepniak marc, anrl fho is owned by Mif* E. M. Hicks, of Waitara, who, it will bo remembered, rnrli.' her to success at the rioint-fri-point.

gelding by Quarantine from a Westmere mare. Kaola, 'who completes this field, is a five-year-old bay gelding b.y Valkyrian from the Potoa mare Rangitamuku and he is held on lease by Mr. S. E. Cleaver, of Waverley. \
