THE ENGLISH TEAM

Iv view of the interest being taken by the Now Zealand Golf Association in the1 possible visit of the English amateur team for the Centenary in Meibourno to New Zealand, a , few notes on some of the players may bo welcomed. L. G. Garnett, who took tho winner of the British amateur championship,. Lawson Little, to the nineteenth, is a young Londoner who has- played consistently good golf for a long time before ho came under public notice. A tremendously strong, though accurate driver, ho was not at all inferior to Little in this department of tho game, and Ferrior and Hattersloy, and other long-hitting Australians and visitors will havo a valuablo standard of the length necessary in big golf today in Garnott, which will be all the more useful as the distances secured undor identical atmospheric and course conditions will bo compared.

J. McLean, another member of the touring party, also performed with distinction in this year's British amateur title evout. Ho beat two prominent Americans, Fischer (Collegiato chainpiou) and Guildford, but thou fell to James Wallace and his, horde, of unruly supporters. McLean had the unpleasant - experience of being cheered to tho echo when he missed a putt or hit a faulty shot. That was a severe mental hazard which the Glasgow-born player could not surmount. .-• McLean won the West pf Scotland boys' championship at the ago of 15. He has numorous other successes, and is tho holder of a number of amateur course records. Ho was born ou February 2(5, 1911. A third member of the touring side, T. A. Bourne, was the English amateur champion in 1930, and was among tho last 16 in the American amateur championship in 1929. The previous year ho won the Fronch amateur championship. He is a masterly exponent with thy mashie-mblick. "
