SEARCH FOR GOLD
SURVEYS TO BE MADE
COMMITTEE APPOINTED
A wide extension of the geophysical survey was announced by tho Prime Minister (the Et. Hon. G. W. Forbes) in an interview last night. The Government intends that localities likely to contain gold should, be tho subject of a geophysical and geological survey with the idea of employing men now out of work in tho recovory of the motal. Mr. Forbes said that the results of geological and geophysical surveys had revealed several interesting now features of the gold deposits in Otago and Southland. It had been decided, in conjunction with the Mines Department and the Unemployment Board, to extend tho scale of geophysical operations in various parts of Now Zealand. Additional instruments wcro to bo purchased so that tho work could bo carried on move quickly. "The dominating consideration in tho programme of work will bo that relating to unemployment possibilities," said Mr. Forbes, "and the programme of work has been placed under a committee consisting of the Undor-Secre-tary for Mines (Mr. A. Tyndall), the Under-Secrotary of tho Department of Scientific Eesearch (Dr. E. Marsden), and the deputy chairman of the Unemployment Board (Mr. Walter Bromley).
Where there were possibilities of gold being found in payable quantities such as Waihi, the West Coast of tho South Island, and Otago and Southland, said Mr. Forbes, the surveys would be under-' taken. The present system of undertaking private surveys for gold-mining concerns would bo continued, but there would be much more work of a public nature.
