TAXI DRIVER'S DRIVING
Some strong comment on th& driving of a taxi-driver was made by Mr. J. G. L Hewitt, S.M., in tho Lower Hutt Court yesterday, 'when W. Osborne was charged with driving in a dangorous manner. Osborne, who did not appear, wai fined £5 and his licence was cancelled for six months. Edward S. Hewer said that on tno evening of Juno 3 he was driving north when an approaching car nearly hit him and lie nearly had to go into the ditch to miss the vehicle. Ho looked back and saw that the other, car had narrowly missed crashing into a fence. Ho stopped his car and spoko to the driver, who did not reply but drovo on. The witness turned arid followed tho motorist down to Lower Hutt, and noticed that he'nearly hit a bicycle. He was on and off the bitumen all the way. ■'• \. . Thomas Hewer gave corroborative evidence. Alexander Dunn' said that ho was riding his bicycle in High Street-when a car suddenly struck his rear mudguard. The car did not stop. Ho met some men who were following the car, and they' went to • tho- Lower Hutt police. '; ' : Sergeant J. W. McHolni said that Osborne was interviewed by the police at Wellington and admitted that he was the driver of the vehicle in quesitioiu Ho denied being intoxicated. Sergeant McHolni! said that attempts had been made to get Osborne to come to the Court, but he seemed to take the matter lightly. . ' The Magistrate said that Osborne's driving was as bad as it could possibly be, and if ho drove like that ho waseither drunk or utterly incapable. Ho thought the caso was one for suspendi irig the licence. ,
