NEW HARBOUR WORKS
• The Wellington • Harbour Board has displayed both' sound judgment and a good public spirit; in resolving to put in : hand a programme' of new harbour works. The works .will involve an "expenditure; ;of ,-■ approximately £66,000, mostly, on labour (directly and indirectly) and Avill.be' spread over a period of two years. It would have been possible to defer some of the works for a long time; but it is wiser to choose the present time for development. -Value will be added to the board's assets and the accommodation and facilities of the porpwill be improved in preparation for the/growth of trade. The community also will benefit, and that substantially, through the employment of labour. Such schemes as this are most timely for a depression period:..../.They help to. fill in the hollows left''by "the receding tide of trade. ■ Unfortunately many public bodies .are not able, to follow the Harbour Board's good. "example. They have spent so. freely in the past that they-have outrun their resources. The' Wellington' Harbour Board, having carefullyshusbanded its resources, can now increase its expenditure on capital works without fear of having to levy extra'charges on ratepayers or users of,its services. .'-.
