ERROR IN STATING AGE
After Woodlace's" success in the V.E.C. Grand National. Steeplechase the week before last it was suggested in some quarters that a protest might be made against the race's being awarded him on the ground that his age had been wrongly stated in the nomination form. Needless -'to say, the connections of Eedditch had no intention of protesting because they werp satisfied that Eedditch had been defeated on his merits.' « :
Woodlace was bred in 1927, so is rising seven years, but when his entry for the Grand National was made he was described as an aged horse instead of six years. Even had a protest been lodged, it would not have had much chance of being upheld, unless it could be shown that the misstatement of age was fraudulent, which, of course, was not the case. There was a similar case last October, when Practice finished second to Carmoa in a race at Kyneton. Tha age of Carmoa was wrongly stated, and a protest was entered against the winner, but as the. stewards took the view that the horse was' sufficiently, identified, and there was no reason to suspect fraud, the protest was dismissed. There is no doubt about the identity of Woodlace, nor was there any ground for believing there was anything fraudulent about the entry of the horse, so it protest against him probably would have met with the same fate as that entered' on behalf of Practice.
