CHANGEABLE AND COLD
BUT WEATHER IMPROVING
Although the weather prospects for the immediate futur'o arc not very bright, according to tho forecast issued at noon today, the outlook for tho weekend is more promising and an improvement should be in evidence by tomorrow. In the meantime strong southerly to south-easterly winds are to be expected to the north of Farewell Spit and Kaikoura, gale force being reached in places. Elsewhere winds will be moderate to strong southerlies or southwesterlies. The weather will be fine in the western districts of the South Island, but will be changeable elsewhere with passing showers. Temperatures will be cold.
The depression referred to yesterday passed' over the Dominion last night, and winds have become" southerly or south-easterly generally and have. increased to gale force in places in the North Island. A portion of the depression was centred, this morning to the east of Capo Maria Van Diemon, but the front of an anticyclone is moving on to the South Island. The weather has been cloudy and unsettled with ra?n in most districts. The northern half of the North Island has had soino heavy falls in places, but elsewhere the rain has been scattered and mainly light. With the southerly change there has been a marked drop in temperatures. Auckland had dull weather yesterday, showers accompanying a moderate easterly wind during the afternoon. A ircsh south-easterly ; wind was blowing thero this morning, tho weather being cold and changeable.
Wellington's weather was fine and mild, although mostly dull, the 2.4 hours of bright sunshine being recorded mostly in tho afternoon. The wind, a moderato northerly, gavo place to a southerly about,B p.m., and it has been strong and squally since. Although conditions have been threatening, very little rain has fallen, only a trace being recorded at Kelburn, while Lower Hutt has had five points.
The weather in Christchurch yesterday was mostly fine and sunny. The morning was calm, but a south-westerly breeze prevailed in the afternoon, and some light showers fell during the night. Conditions this morning were cloudy with a south-westerly breeze. '
Dunedin's weather was cold and changeable, although fine and clear until 10 a.m. Thereafter a south-west-erly broezo freshened and brought showers. The weather was clear again this morning with a' light wind from tho south-west.
A Pi'css Association message advises that Mr. A. E. Ford, manager of the Auckland Transport Board for twelve years, ltytvcs for England next mouth. He expects to investigate the latest transport developments. Mr. E. H. Hartley, manager of the- Auckland Power Board, is also leaving next month for. England to investigate electrical power development.
