TROTTING STUD BOOK

The latest volume of the Trotting Stud Book completely dwaifs all its predecessois except the one that immediately preceded it. It contains a. list of about 900. mares and their, produce. Particulars are supplied of colonial standard-bred' stallions, tabulated pedtgiees of imported horses, records of all the fastest hoises raced in' New Zealand, and all • the available information in connection with the breeding of the light-harness hbise. \ The compiler, Mr. W. H. Larcombe, is well worthy of congratiilntion on the thorough manner in which he has carried out his task in the face of great difficulties represented by the carelessness of some breeders in failing to supply returns, aud the vast amount of search work necessary to track and complete the records. Anyone who has endeavoured to trace the breeding of some notable horses not in the Stud Book will recognise^the time and trouble Mr. Larcombe must have put in over tho volume, and only an enthusiast would undertake to complete such a task. Hisreward will come if breeders and those more than superficially interested iv lio;htharnesa racing place the volume in their library. It will certainly help to stimulate/.the interest : in breeding, and owners of brood mitres cannot afford to be without it if they wish to study the best method of linking successful strains.
