MAGISTRATE'S COURT
Police and summons cases in the Magistrate's Court today were dealt with by Mr. E. Page, S.M. A remand until August 10 was granted to Edward Allan Cook, aged 22, a farm hand, who is charged with unlawful carnal knowledge. Bail was allowed in the sum of £100, with a surety of a like amount. For a second statutory offence of drunkenness John Joseph Poland, aged G9, a labourer, was fined 10s, in default three days' imprisonment. Alfred F.nsoin, Frank Kidd, and James Edward Popple were each fined 10s for behaving in a disorderly manner in the Night Bird Cafe. The evidence was that they were throwing butter about the premises. Through his counsel, Ensom denied having thrown any butter, though lie accidentally broke a teapot, for which he paid. For working at his trade in a public place on a Sunday, Albert Kennedy, a painter, was convicted and ordered to pay 10s costs. Michael Crowley was fined £2 for having been found on licensed premises after hours. For using unlicensed radio sets two defendants were each fined £2, and one was fined £1. Keith Craig, a scrap-metal dealer, was convicted on a charge of failing to pay the whole amount of wages due, and the question, of penalty was held over for a fortnight. -' A fine of £,2 was imposed upon Matheson and Wilkinson, Ltd., clothing manufacturers, for failing to allow a Saturday half-holiday. Counsel explained that the offence was an isolated one that would not have occurred but for disorganisation caused by illness and the absence of the foreman- ml charge of overtime.. No pressure was brought to bear on any of the employees, who wore anxious to work on. the Saturday afternoon for the double rates of pay they received for it.
• Although ho pleaded not guilty in tho Magistrate's Court today to a charge of stealing from George Doherty a scarf valued at 7s Gd, James Fearon, aged 21, was convicted by Mr. E. Page, S.M., and ordered to pay 24s costs. The theft was stated to have occurred at a dance hall.
