MISS GREIG'S TRAVELS
VISIT TO JAPAN
(From "The Post's" Representative.) LONDON, -Juno 21. Miss V. M. Greig (Wellington) has been attending the Headmistresses' Conference, held at St. Paul's School, Hammersmith. She travelled to England by way of Java, Singapore, Hpng Kong, Shanghai, japan, and Cajiada. She found her three weeks in japan full of delight, being-specially interested in the old culture, customs, temples, arts, and crafts, of tjje- country, as well as its seenio beauty and in the education, particularly of the women and girls, . . .
Miss Greig-said she made so many contacts in Japan that the timo went all too rapidly. She visited several educational institutions, and met same of Japan's most interesting women, $8 well as many men interested in the same problems as are puzzling the Western pooples. Japan is progressing most rapidly along Western lines, b,ut she will adopt only such Western ways and ideas as she wants.
Jfiss Greig hopes that Jap&n will retain her individuality as a nation- At heart the Japanese people are Idealists, seeking for the spiritual meaning In life. . The Western Christian nations must interpret to them this spiritual meaning. Otherwise, they are not justified in remaining in ■ Japan. The Japanese are keen on education, and •the people are everywhere seizing every available opportunity of learning and improving their English. She found them extremely courteous, hospitable, and kind to strangers. While in Europe Miss Greig hopqs to visit Italy, Switzerland, Austrian Tyrol, Germany, Sweden, and Norway, as well as, of course, places of interest in the British Isles. On her return journey to Now Zealand, via Suez, she hopes to see Egyjfc aud the Holy_ Land,
